The Bronx Gate Keeper

TA: Born, raised, currently reside?
GK: Born in Harlem, NY. Raised in The Bronx, currently live in The Bronx. Edenwald projects, The Horseshoe. North East Bronx!
TA: You’ve had a wonderful example of “good music” from a young age. Was it “specifically\” the influence from your parents that lead you to music?
GK: No my parents weren’t direct reason i got into music. They did play a lot of music while we were kids and that really opened the gates to trying to sing and rap but they weren’t any type of musician or something.
TA: Why the name “Gate Keeper?”
GK: Gatekeeper: It wasn’t my first name. I was “The Punisher” at first and that was a name I ran with in the streets, of course I got it from the comic book. Then I learned of “Big Pun” and when He died. I wanted to switch up the name a bit. I went thru many names but all the credit must go to my brother “CannibalBlaze.” My producer and group artist gave me the name “Gatekeeper.” It fell in place with the person I had grown into, leading a group “Fully loaded” starting an Independent Label. It fit perfect for a person that would stand watch and control what came in and out of “Bettter Green Entertainment” as a label and brand.
TA: Your first show or performance in front of a large crowd, how’d it go?
GK: My first show was at the Flat in Brooklyn. There was a nice crowed. I did well but the biggest crowed I’ve preformed in front of was in Boston. A showcase hosted by David Bolds, it was in the Hard Rock Cafe. I did very well and the people enjoyed my music!

TA: How’s your city receiving your music?
GK: I’m still growing in my city. I haven’t gotten a lot of request but all of the showcases that I’ve done, I’ve gotten invited back so I believe I’m being received very well. I received my first award from an Internet Radio Show. I’ve preformed at “Rock the Mic” by Rock Mobb radio in the Bronx.
TA: How long have you been in the industry?
GK: “Bettter Green Entertainment” is two years old, so on the record, two years. I’ve just completed a deal with Sugo, F.M.B.M.C. and Sony
TA: Do you agree with the transformation of Hip-hop, good or bad over all?
GK: I love all types of Music. I don’t think everything should be labeled Hip hop but I do think that Hip hop has many levels and it is growing! I don’t think its a bad thing but I do think all lanes should get the proper respect.
TA: What specifically would you like to see change in the industry?
GK: I would like to see Independent artist get rotation on main stream radio. Something that is a fare rate to new artist! Most stations won’t touch indie artist, with no real support financially. They only help artist when they think the artist will blow up.
TA: What’s some of your long-term goals in the music industry?
GK: Long term, I would love to have top hits that will last forever! I would love to see “Better Green Entertainment” become that next label breaking and building artist brands like Rock Nation or Bad Boy but we have a long way to go!
TA: Are you producing any artists?
GK: Yes, I have eight artist including myself, Gatekeeper, Cannibalblaze, BoloUno, Jaxamillion, Dras, Mike-jaye, Chopper Jr and Transporter.
TA: Cool, you have a crew of atrists. How do you prepare for the studio?
GK: I prep for the studio by listing to music that moves me. A lot of in house tracks from me or my other label mates or artist I enjoy. The party favors come during or after work is done for me.
TA: Your Track “Clips Unfold” nice one! Any consideration of a remix?
GK: Clips unfold was one of my best tracks but it was only a freestyle Track. It has a lot of promise and I would love to do a remix under the right circumstances. It’s a song that I was able to just open up and speak to the sole and mind like hip hop did for me as a kid.
TA: Out of all of your tracks, what’s your favorites and why?
GK: My favorite song, that personally hasn’t been dropped yet but if I had to pick one out of the songs that are out its a three way tie if thats possible, They are all on my latest body of work titled “It’s kinda hard everybody raps vol \” except one, victory, checkmate and the one not on the album is history with me and my oldest daughter. TA: Your mission was to bring The “Bronx back.” How do you think that’s going today?
GK: Bronx is getting back strong, growing with serious Artists every day. Looking good!
TA: NY artists are now “conforming” to the styles of other regions. What’s your take on that?
GK: I don’t conform to any style. I just do what the track call for. If it works for that artist then I have no problem with it. Good music is good music, bad music is bad.
TA: Tell us about “Charlie Clips” and why you respect him so much?
GK: “Charlie Clips” I felt like He always held his own in a battle and just being able to freestyle on the spot is always something special.
TA: Away from music, what do you enjoy or do to relax? Gate Keeper
GK: Outside of music, I enjoy my kids. I have three daughters Tyleeka, Dahshanique and Tykaja Green. They are my Queens along with my wife. I love the time we spend together when we can. Sports and cartoons, I can watch them all day every day.
TA: You had a noted football career. What College and NFL team you rocking with this year and why?
GK: Yea football was my thing I love the S.E.C conference of all when it comes to football. I decided that I’m going with Georgia because they put out running backs like myself. Yes, I was all with the boycott but I would like to see it taking to the next level. We need this special figure to be able to speak on things that are important to the areas that we come from and will return to!
TA: Better Green Entertainment, who’s behind that company, the direction and goals?
GK: Tyrone green is the face and the soul of Bettter Green Entertainment. I wanted to create an ave for my future. Something to fall back on If I decide to retire or when I’m done.
TA: What’s your input on an “underground Hip hop Music awards show?” Do you think it’s time for that?
GK: Yes, it’s beyond time. I think It’s good for the artist to be rewarded for their work. It will make them work harder and encourage others to continue the tradition.
TA: Advice for up & coming artists?
GK: My advice to any young artist that is coming up – Do your home work on the history of music, business in music. Then work hard, no days off! If you can do that, things will fall in place! Never expect things to be over night.
