My day started out @ 7am as I got ready for one of the most exciting events of the 2026 for me.: Phoenix Fan Fusion 2026. Even though I knew it would be a busy Saturday, June 6th, I was filled with anticipation as I headed downtown to join thousands of fellow fans. The energy surrounding the Phoenix Convention Center was incredible, with people arriving from all over Arizona and beyond to celebrate comics, science fiction, fantasy, gaming, anime, and pop culture. From the moment I arrived, it was clear this was going to be an unforgettable experience.
One of the first challenges of the day was simply getting inside. The line to enter stretched for what seemed like forever, and I ended up waiting for well over two hours before finally making it through the doors. Despite the long wait, spirits remained high as fans chatted about their favorite franchises, showed off their costumes, and compared schedules for panels and celebrity appearances. The excitement in the crowd helped make the time pass quickly, and once inside, the massive scale of the convention made the wait feel worthwhile.
Phoenix Fan Fusion has a long and fascinating history. Originally launched in 2002 as Phoenix Cactus Comicon, the event began as a relatively small gathering of comic book enthusiasts. Over the years, it steadily grew into one of the largest pop-culture conventions in the Southwest. The convention eventually expanded beyond comics to include television, movies, gaming, anime, literature, and cosplay, leading to its current identity as Phoenix Fan Fusion. Today, it attracts tens of thousands of attendees annually and has become one of Arizona’s premier entertainment events.
One of the highlights of the convention was the impressive lineup of celebrity guests. Fans had opportunities to meet actors, artists, authors, voice actors, and comic book creators from across the entertainment world. For me, however, the most exciting guest was legendary comic book writer Chris Claremont. Seeing one of the most influential creators in comic book history in person and having him autograph some key issues from my collection was a dream come true. His contributions to Marvel Comics helped define an entire generation of storytelling and continue to influence creators today.
Chris Claremont is best known for his historic run on The Uncanny X-Men, which began with Giant-Size X-Men #1 in 1975 and continued through Uncanny X-Men #279 in 1991. During those sixteen years, he transformed the X-Men from a struggling comic into one of the most successful franchises in the industry. He co-created or helped develop iconic characters such as Rogue, Kitty Pryde, Mystique, Emma Frost, and many others. His stories introduced legendary storylines including The Dark Phoenix Saga, Days of Future Past, God Loves, Man Kills, and Inferno. Beyond the X-Men, Claremont also wrote memorable runs on New Mutants, Excalibur, Wolverine, Fantastic Four, and numerous Marvel graphic novels, cementing his status as one of comics’ greatest writers.
As the day continued, I explored the enormous exhibit hall packed with vendors, artists, collectors, and creators. Every aisle offered something new to discover, from rare comic books and collectibles to handmade artwork and unique merchandise. The artist alley was especially impressive, allowing fans to meet talented creators and purchase original pieces directly from them. Throughout the convention center, panel discussions and special events provided endless opportunities to learn more about favorite franchises and hear directly from industry professionals.
Perhaps the most spectacular part of Phoenix Fan Fusion 2026 was the cosplay. Everywhere I looked, incredible costumes brought beloved characters to life. Fans dressed as heroes, villains, Jedi, Sith, anime icons, video game legends, and comic book characters filled the convention halls. I saw everyone from Goku and Vegeta to Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Sexy female Stormtroopers, femme fatales and Mandalorians, Spider-Man, Deadpool, Batman, Wonder Woman, and countless others. The creativity, craftsmanship, and passion displayed by the cosplay community were truly amazing. Combined with the celebrity guests, comics, panels, and the shared enthusiasm of thousands of fans, Phoenix Fan Fusion 2026 was an unforgettable celebration of pop culture and one of the most fun experiences I have ever had.
