Is “Sinners” the Best Movie of 2025 (So Far!)? A Reluctant Horror Fan Weighs In

Okay, let’s get one thing straight: I’m not exactly a horror aficionado. My relationship with the genre is…complicated, to say the least. Let’s just say I’m more likely to not to break any of the horror movie codes of conduct in real life. So, when I was challenged to watch “Sinners,” the new vampire flick everyone’s been buzzing about, I braced myself for the worst.

Color me surprised, because “Sinners” might just be the best movie I’ve seen in 2025, and that’s coming from someone who actively avoids the genre! What makes this movie so compelling? It’s not just the suspense and build up, but also the unexpected scares (and, trust me, there are plenty), it’s the vibe. From every thing to the costume design, to the cinematography, down to the music score. This film is top notch. It’s not perfect by any means. But damn near close.

“Sinners” isn’t your typical modern horror film. It’s got this amazing blend of old-school cool, reminiscent of “The Lost Boys,” mixed with the stylish, atmospheric dread of classic Hammer Horror. Think the authenticate cinematography of 30’s era America and charming, charismatic neighbors next door that turn on you when the sun goes down. Director Ryan Coogler has tapped into something special here.

But the real magic lies in the cast. Let’s be honest, a good horror movie needs a great ensemble, and “Sinners” delivers in spades. Michael B. Jordan, as the conflicted protagonists ( He plays a set of identical Twins named Smoke and Stack: As in legendary blues song Smoke Stack lightening ) grappling with their past, brings a raw intensity to the role. Hailee Steinfeld shines as the sultry and beautiful ex-girlfriend of stack adding a much-needed dose of grit and determination. The legendary Delroy Lindo provides gravitas and a subtle humor in his role as Slim that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

And then there’s Jack O’Connell. Let’s just say, O’Connell owns the screen as Remmick, the charismatic and undeniably dangerous vampire leader. He’s mesmerizing, magnetic, and genuinely terrifying. Remmick isn’t just a monster; he’s a force of nature, and O’Connell’s performance is nothing short of breathtaking. He elevates the entire film, making Remmick a villain you both fear and are strangely drawn to. This movie was so good it would be amazing if they did a prequel if nothing else just on Remmick alone.

This movie is a stylish, suspenseful, dark, creepy, a multi-layered deeply disturbing thriller with a compelling story and unforgettable performances. It’s a film that respects the genre’s roots while injecting a modern sensibility.
